Quick update: We had snow last night, which gave proof of the return of the scurrilous skunk. The run and coop were surrounded by incriminating skunk prints in the snow, especially in the area where I suspected entry had been gained before. But we awoke to three healthy hens, so all’s well that (so far ) end’s well. The trusty Ruger 10/22 remains ready for future bad acts, of course.

if you shoot a skunk, and happen to pierce the stink sack (I’m sure that’s the technical term), I assume it’s like a skunk sprayed? Good times!
As you can imagine, I’ve been doing quite a bit of research on this, and the answer is, yeah, that skunk is likely to discharge live or dead. Some folks say that a shot placed just right can avoid the stink, but we know my luck doesn’t run this way. Apparently, they are pretty easy to trap in a live trap, and it is claimed (intentional passive voice here) that they are amenable to having a tarp or blanket placed over the trap to calm them.
